It’s All About Calories

And trying to increase your basal metobolic rate (the amount of energy used by the body to sustain its vital functions) in order to burn more calories is a pipe dream!
There’s no magical way to lose weight. It comes down to physical activity and diet. Take in fewer calories than you burn, and you lose weight. But if you’re worried about your metabolism or you can’t seem to lose excess weight despite diet and exercise, talk to your doctor.

Men Who Hate Women…

Lisbeth Salander, the heroine, is brilliant, tough, relentless— a super Pippi.*
In this world of misogyny and rampant abuse of women, reading about a woman who has the brains, strength and will power to extract revenge on her abusers is a powerful message.
Unfortunately, in the real world abused women rarely get revenge.
*Nine-year-old Pippi (from the children’s books by Astrid Lindgren) is unconventional, assertive, and has superhuman strength, being able to lift her horse one-handed without difficulty. She frequently mocks and dupes adults she encounters, an attitude likely to appeal to young readers; however, Pippi usually reserves her worst behavior for the most pompous and condescending of adults.
Obamcares….80/20 Rule
Posted: December 27, 2011 Filed under: health and fitness 1 Comment »As the Affordable Care Act begins to kick in very important aspects of it are being revealed.
The 80/20 Rule (medical loss ratio) requires insurers to spend 80 cents of every premium dollar on health care. Now much premium money is being spent on CEO salaries and payment to shareholders!
It’s certainly no surprise that there are states asking for waivers to get around this new rule. Don’t protect the consumer, protect the insurance companies…the Republican motto.
So far Michigan and Florida have been denied these waivers by the Obama Administration. In Florida there will be at least $60 million (using 2010 numbers) in rebates. In Michigan based on a federal analysis, some 9 million insured people could be eligible for rebates worth up to $1.4 billion starting in 2012.
Fashions That Came…And Stayed
Posted: December 26, 2011 Filed under: fashion Leave a comment »JEANS! JEANS! JEANS! In 1853 blue jeans were being manufactured and sold for work clothes and to cowboys. In the 1950′s teenagers picked them up as a fashion statement and that’s what they’ve been ever since. Skinny, baggy, tapered, straight, boot cut, mommy-cut, maternity, bell bottom, low slung and even lower slung.
The word “jeans” comes from the French phrase bleu de Gênes, literally the blue of Genoa. Jeans fabric, or denim, originated in the French town of Nimes, from which ‘denim’ (deNimes) gets its name. (Wikipedia)
Obama and Jackson Get It Done

In and of itself, this is a great victory for public health, especially for the health of our children.” Lisa Jackson on December 21, 2011
But this one is a Big Deal. It’s worth lifting our heads out of the news cycle and taking a moment to appreciate that history is being made. Finally controlling mercury and toxics will be an advance on par with getting lead out of gasoline. It will save save tens of thousands of lives every year and prevent birth defects, learning disabilities, and respiratory diseases. It will make America a more decent, just, and humane place to live. …
“The Kamikazes”
Posted: December 22, 2011 Filed under: politics Leave a comment »Boehner blames the president for the payroll extension debacle….Patricia Murphy (The Daily Beast) tells a different story...” Democrats blamed a group of Republicans they’ve dubbed “the kamikazes,” the GOP freshmen who arrived in January on a wave of Tea Party anger and have shown time and again that they are willing to blow up their careers and everything around them in service to their cause.
The kamikazes’ casualty list this year is long. They blew up the debt-ceiling vote this summer, sparking a downgrade in the nation’s credit rating. They blew up the appropriations process so thoroughly that routine spending votes morphed into philosophical standoffs that nearly locked down the federal government three times and required seven temporary funding patches just to keep the lights on. And this week, they managed to blow up not just a tax cut that nearly everyone in Washington agrees is a good idea, but also their party’s hard-earned reputation for cutting taxes and, quite possibly, their chances at a long-term majority in the House and future control of the Senate.”
The tea party Republican’s “cause” is the destruction of Obama. Nothing more and nothing less.
